Todays Zaman: Solo performers steal the spotlights

A one woman show that keeps you guessing

I had the pleasure of seeing an improvised spoken piece by Çağlar Yiğitoğulları revealing his own personal demons; a wordless “CamAdımlar” by İlyas Odman; and “Make Me Laugh, Make Me Cry” by Nebahat Erpolat, at GalataPerform and Kumbaracı50, respectively. Odman’s piece was a physically challenging exercise in motor control: Walking on overturned wine glasses for 50 minutes.

Erpolat’s theatrical creation on March 2 used Blondie’s song “A Heart of Glass” to open and close her slightly absurdist, vaudeville-tinged 35-minute showcase. “Welcome to Love,” drawling out the third word, she suggested we were in for an exploration of the vicissitudes of l’amour.

What we witnessed was a fantasy take on conscious identity, in a mélange of spoken word, dance, prop creativity and shock value: She pointed a gun at the audience before aiming at herself.

These are the ingredients, however the salad is tossed, of a one woman show that keeps you guessing -- about love, demons, or whatever. Whether or not it is understood in the end, the original and personal solo show’s value is inestimable and vital to the city’s theater life.
